Jogjakarta Borobudur Temple

There are different names for Yogyakarta. Senior citizens call it Ngayogyakarta; people from East Java and Central Java name it Yogya. Yogyajarta is called Jogja in the slogan of Jogja Never Ending Asia. There are at least 3 development periods to be explained concerning Jogjakarta city. The name Ngayogyakarta existed in 1755 when Mangkubumi Prince whose title was Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I founded the Kingdom of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. The kingdom was built on the Bering Forest area where the realization of Giyanti Agreement was administered with Pakubuwono III from Surakarta. It is unclear when the name Yogyakarta first occured, whether it is a contraction of the name Ngayogyakarto or because of other reasons.

However, the name of Yogyakarta has been used officially since the Indonesian independence when it was used as Nation’s Capital in 1949. Since then this student city has been called Yogyakarta. Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX also used the name of Yogyakarta when he announced the kingdom as a part of Republic of Indonesia. Some other names such as Yogja, Jogja, Jogya and Yogya came afterwards. The variations may exist from different pronunciation of people from different parts of Indonesia. Interestingly, people will refer to the same area when they hear those different names. For business purpose, the name of Jogja becomes more popular and it is used in the slogan Jogja Never Ending Asia. The slogan is intended to build the image of Yogyakarta as a tourism city having great natural and culture enchantments. The reason to choose the name 'Jogja' is that the pronunciation of the word is relatively easy for most people, including foreigners. Some institutions once change Yogyakarta with Jogjakarta.

With various spellings and pronunciations, Yogyakarta is the only city with many various names becomes very popular as the main access to visit Borobudur Temple, the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world. This colossal relic of Borobudur Temple was built by Syailendra Dynasty between 750 and 842 AD; 300 years before Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, 400 years before work had begun on the great European Cathedrals. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles revealed Borobudur Temple in 1814. He found Borobudur temple in ruin condition and ordered that the site be cleared of undergrowth and thoroughly surveyed. The massive restoration project began from 1905 to 1910 led by Dr. Th. Van Erp. With the assistance of UNESCO, the second restoration to rescue Borobudur was carried out in 1983. The overall height of Borobudur was 42 meters, but it is only 34.5 meters now (after restoration) and has the dimension of 123 x 123 meters. The building has The building has 10 floors or levels: Humtcambharabudara, the mountain of the accumulation of virtue in the ten stages of Bodhisatva. Borobudur is located 41 km Northwest of Yogyakarta, 7 km South of Magelang, Central Java. With the existing greatness and mystery, it makes sense if many people put Borobudur in their agenda as a place worth visiting in their lives.
